Case study: Enhancing system stability for a healthcare organization

Client overview

Our client, a healthcare organization based in Indiana dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care, faced critical challenges with the stability and performance of their core systems. These challenges directly impacted their ability to provide timely treatment, making the situation untenable in an industry where lives depend on reliable technology.

The problem

The organization had three core systems that were integral to its operations. However, these systems were all reliant on a single database server, representing a single point of failure: if the database server went offline, the systems would become completely inoperable. The stakes were particularly high in a healthcare environment, where such outages could delay treatment and jeopardize patient care.

The organization had already experienced instances of system instability, prompting them to seek a solution. Initially, their software vendors had installed the core systems, but the setup lacked redundancy, and the performance of these systems was subpar. Compounding the problem, the healthcare provider lacked in-house database expertise to address these issues effectively.

Sovereign Systems’ solution

When the organization reached out to Sovereign Systems, we recognized the urgency and critical nature of their challenges. Leveraging our expertise in crafting and maintaining custom software, we set out to transform their systems for improved performance and reliability.

Our solution unfolded in two key phases:

  1. Performance tuning

    • We conducted a thorough assessment of their existing database server to identify performance issues.

    • We significantly enhanced the speed and efficiency of their core systems, ensuring they could handle the demands of their operations without lag or interruptions.

  2. Creating three availability groups

    • To eliminate the single point of failure, we implemented three availability groups. This configuration involved setting up two database servers for each core system. If one server experienced a failure, the other could seamlessly take over, ensuring continuous operation.

    • This approach can be likened to installing a backup generator for a critical facility. Just as a backup generator ensures power remains uninterrupted during an outage, the availability group guaranteed that the healthcare provider’s systems would stay online, even in the face of hardware failures.

The results

With our intervention, the healthcare organization experienced:

  • Improved system stability: The availability group eliminated the risk of system-wide outages, providing peace of mind to the client and ensuring uninterrupted patient care.

  • Enhanced performance: Our tuning efforts resulted in faster, more reliable systems, enabling the organization to operate more efficiently and focus on its primary mission of delivering quality healthcare.

At Sovereign Systems, we understand the critical role technology plays in healthcare. By addressing this organization’s unique challenges, we demonstrated our commitment to delivering solutions that combine technical excellence with tangible impact. Whether modernizing legacy systems or building resilience into existing frameworks, we pride ourselves on equipping our clients to achieve their goals without compromise.
